Cap Cana announced that the IRONMAN 70.3 Cap Cana competition will be held for the second time in the country next Sunday, May 4th, with more than 1,000 athletes and over 6,000 national and international spectators.
The world-renowned triathlon attracts thousands of tourists who come to the Dominican Republic as a way to consolidate sports tourism, combined with wellness and diversification tourism.
In this regard, both within and outside the destination, the sections of the southbound carriageway of the Coral Highway and Thed Keel Avenue will be closed, heading west to east from the entrance to Higuey to the entrance to Cap Cana. The closures were authorized by the competent authorities: Intrant, the Ministry of Public Works and Communications (MOPyC), the National Police, the RD Víal (Road Directorate), Digessett, Politur, and Comipol.
The closure will be in effect from 3:00 a.m. on Sunday until 1:00 p.m. on the same day, because these roads will be used for the cycling race, part of the triathlon.
Nearly 1,000 athletes will visit Cap Cana with their families and coaches, which will translate into more than 6,000 visitors in just one weekend. Athletes will swim, bike, and run in and around the destination, appreciating the wonders of the surrounding nature and contributing to the country’s economy through their stays, travel, and spending, among other activities, lasting approximately five days on average.
Athletes will begin their IRONMAN 70.3 Cap Cana challenge with a 1.9 km (1.2 mile) swim on Cap Cana’s private shoreline and beach in the Atlantic Ocean. Once out of the water, athletes will head to the transition area (200 meters from the swim course start) and embark on a 90 km (56 mile) single-lap bike ride that will traverse the streets and beautiful gardens of Cap Cana to the national highway.
The 21.1 km (13.1 mile) run will traverse the destination city on a flat course that will take athletes to the Cap Cana Marina. The finish line will be located on Juanillo Beach, near the Dreams Hotel.
