About 715,000 Canadians arrived in the Dominican Republic in 2022, while Canada is among the country’s biggest trading markets.
Data provided by OAG Schedules Analyser show that five Canadian carriers serve the Canada-Dominican Republic market at the present time, collectively providing 70,200 nonstop two-way scheduled weekly seats between the countries. Flights mainly cater for Canadian leisure passengers seeking a warm weather winter vacation.
Air Transat has a 39.7% capacity share of the market and offers 16 routes in total, while Sunwing has 31.2% and connects 24 airport pairs. Air Canada is the third largest operator with 13%, followed by WestJet on 7.9% and Swoop on 2.7%.
Talking specifically about Punta Cana, Air Transat & Sunwing offer daily flights from Toronto and Montreal. They offer direct flights also from Quebec City. Air Canada flies daily to Punta Cana from Toronto and 2-3 days per week from Montreal. In the high season (from November till March) the number of direct flights increases and more cities get connected, including Edminton, Halifax, Hamilton among others.
Westjet is the 4th operator so far with direct flights from Toronto and Calgary but soon things will change. In fact in March, the federal government approved WestJet’s takeover of Sunwing Vacations and Sunwing Airlines, despite a warning from the Competition Bureau that the purchase would likely result in higher prices and decreased services, especially around package deals. But that’s not all! Westjet is also going to shut down the other popular low-cost Swoop, which will finish to fly to Punta Cana at the end of October. The news is a bad development for consumers as Swoop’s demise will remove a major player in Canada’s discount travel space.
That means Punta Cana will become more expensive to fly to? With all these recent changes the answer seems yes. However there is also a good news for those people looking for a budget solution. Ultra low-cost airline FLAIR is going to to offer direct flights from Toronto and Ottawa starting at the end of October 2023 with great prices as low as 300-350CAD round trip.
