Hoyo Claro: The Best Kept Secret Place in Punta Cana

Today we want to tell you a bit of a magnificent place located in Punta Cana, a natural monument most people don’t know about: the beautiful cenote of Hoyo Claro.

This place of crystalline and shocking blue waters is located something like 20-25 minutes away from the Punta Cana International Airport and encompasses a humid area of palm forests, with several lagoons, in the coastal plain of the eastern region. It is important to know that you cannot confuse the Hoyo Claro with the Hoyo Azul “Blue Hole” in Cap Cana, which is sold by all the main tour operators and tour agencies (like us) and is packed with tourists every day.

The Hoyo Claro cenote instead is not a tourist site, or better not yet, although many locals are starting to go there especially on Sunday. How to get to Hoyo Claro?

It’s not so easy to reach it. The entrance is located along the Coral Highway leaving from Punta Cana and going direction to Santo Domingo, around Km 9, but on the other side of the road. Once found the point you need to leave the highway and continue through a rocky, bumpy dirt road for around 20 minutes. The road unfortunately is not in good condition, so you can drive through only if you have a SUV car or Jeep. Otherwise you have to park there and walk for around 30-35 minutes. The cenote is located in private grounds so you have to pay a fee to enter. But once you’ll see it, you’ll agree the effort was worthy. Its gorgeous crystal clear blue waters will invite you to have a refreshing bath inside while all around the vegetation will give you a sense of peace.

Based on our travel experience to this magnificent place we recommend taking into account the following considerations:

– Go in the morning hours to take advantage of the time on the site.
– Bring insect repellent, because there are many mosquitoes.
– If you go alone try to go with someone who already knows the area, to avoid getting lost as there are no signals around.
– Consider that there is nothing to buy, bring your own food, drinks and garbage bag.
– There is no toilet either.
– When bathing do not use protectors or sunscreen, so as not to contaminate the fish.
