Plastic containers will be banned on Saona and Catalina

SANTO DOMINGO – The Ministry of the Environment and Natural Resources issued a resolution that prohibits the use of plastic materials on Saona and Catalina Islands, with the aim of reducing the use of disposable containers and their impact on nature.

The manager of sustainability programs, Jorge Ruiz, spoke on the subject and explained that one of the main objectives is to stop the island’s community members from handling this type of material.

These statements were offered during an activity carried out outdoors on the coast of Saona Island.

It is recalled that the Ministry of the Environment and Natural Resources executes the “Saona Sostenible” project on Saona Island, whose main objectives are the dignity of its inhabitants and the correct control and sustainability of this protected area belonging to the Cotubanamá National Park, located in the eastern region of the country, between the provinces of La Romana and La Altagracia.

Through this initiative, which is implemented in coordination with other public and private institutions, it will be possible for national and foreign visitors, who exceed one million each year, to enjoy a safe and dignified place, always with the proper controls that a protected zone of that level.

The environmental authorities explained that, through “Saona Sostenible“, whose implementation period is from 2021 to 2024, the houses affected by Hurricane Fiona and others that were in a vulnerable state are repaired.

The houses that were built in previous years in areas of influence of wetlands with risks of flooding when there are rains will also be relocated to a safe area where they can have basic services.

The goal is to ensure that the inhabitants of the Mano Juan community (that you can visit booking one of our Saona Island tours), whose population is approximately 500 people, have access to drinking water and sanitary drainage services, as well as working on the ordering of the tourist flow of the island so that it benefits more directly to these communities.

The Ministry of Environment clarified that without neglecting the fact that there were already settled communities in that place before it was declared a protected area with decree 1311 of 1975, the role of the institution is to regulate its use. In this sense, he affirmed that no action will be allowed on Saona Island that is outlawed or that contradicts his management plan.
