Punta Cana experiences a historic Holy Week with full occupancy and record visits

The tourist destination of Punta Cana and the entire eastern region of the Dominican Republic are experiencing one of the best seasons of the year, with Holy Week 2026 marked by full occupancy, high demand and an intense flow of foreign visitors.

According to Ernesto Veloz, president of the Eastern Hotels Association (ASOLESTE), hotel occupancy in the main tourist complexes of the area as of Wednesday, April 1st, is 95% and will reach 100% during the Easter weekend.

Among the large hotel complexes reporting full occupancy are high-profile chains such as: Melia Hotel International, Iberostar Hotels and Resorts, Princess Hotels & Resorts, Barcelo Hotel Group, Majestic Resort and Lopesan Hotel Group, among others.

Likewise, high occupancy rates are recorded in holiday residences and alternative accommodations in areas such as Playa Bavaro, El Cortecito and Los Corales, demonstrating the diversification of tourist demand in the destination.

The country is also expecting a surge in domestic tourism, with many Dominicans heading to the coast and countryside to relax and reconnect with traditions.

Here’s a breakdown of what’s happening:

– 478 beaches and rivers are open across the country, with security provided by Defensa Civil, COE, and Policía Nacional.

– 267 balnearios are closed due to safety concerns (strong currents, depth, or pollution).

Top destinations include:

– Punta Cana and Bávaro for classic beach vibes and safety.

– Playa Macao for surfing and natural beauty.

– Casa de Campo and Romana for golf and luxury.

– Cap Cana for upscale accommodations.

– Samaná (Playa Rincón, Cayo Levantado, Las Terrenas) for a tranquil getaway.

– Bahía de las Águilas (Pedernales) for eco-tourism and seclusion.

– Mountain towns Jarabacoa and Constanza are also popular, with occupancy rates above 85%.

Dominicans are also embracing local traditions, with many visiting family towns and enjoying habichuelas con dulce and religious activities in the Ciudad Colonial.

The tourism sector is having one of the best moments. The country aims to surpass 12 million tourists by year-end.
