The wait is over! This Wednesday, the Dominican Winter baseball season kicks off after an eight-month absence.
After a tournament that ended with the Leones del Escogido winning one of the most exciting finals in recent memory, the six teams are set to emerge as favorites on October 15th, all with a strong core to start the season. The action will be played in Santo Domingo, San Pedro and Santiago on Opening Day.
In the capital, the champions will visit their eternal rivals of Tigres del Licey. The pitchers will be Grant Gavin for the Escogidos and César Valdés for the Tigres.
In San Pedro, Los Toros will visit Las Estrellas. Left-hander Matt Dermody will start for the Romanenses, while native right-hander Esmil Rogers will pitch for the Greens.
Finally, in Santiago, Gigantes del Cibao will face Aguilas del Cibao. Right-hander Emilio Vargas will start for the visitors; the Eagles had not announced a pitcher at the time of this publication. The tournament is dedicated to Cooperstown legend Juan Marichal.
